This year the clergy and lay leaders of the Metropolis of San Francisco will have the opportunity to come together at the 2020 Metropolis Clergy-Laity Assembly to be held February 24 – 25, 2020 at Saint Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in Dunlap, California. This annual gathering provides a forum for the leadership of all our communities to deliberate on important matters for our Metropolis and engage in dialogue and fellowship to enrich our common ministry. The Assembly will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24, and will conclude at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2020.

This year’s Assembly will focus on our Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry with the theme, Ministry from the Heart ~ Face to Face, Heart to Heart, featuring guest speaker George Papageorge, LMFT, Director of the Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry. His insightful and interactive presentations will focus on the importance of establishing Family Wellness Ministry in our parishes, and provide a valuable toolkit that delegates can take back to get started on this important work. Additional presentations will be offered by Dr. George Koulianos, MD, speaking on behalf of the Archdiocese Center for Family Care, and Mr. George Cantonis, the newly elected President of Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. There will also be the annual review of the Metropolis finances, the presentation and approval of the 2020 Metropolis Budget, the election of members to the Metropolis Council, and the election of our Metropolis representatives to the Archdiocesan Council.

Online registration is now open and we are requesting full representation from each of our parishes which includes:

  • The Parish Priest
  • The President of the Parish Council, and in his or her absence the Vice President, or in his or her absence any member of the Parish Council designated by it; and
  • Two members of the Parish elected by the Parish Assembly.

Profile George Papageorge

George Papageorge LMFT

George Papageorge serves as the Director of the Family Wellness Ministry for the Metropolis of San Francisco. He is a licensed psychotherapist, specializing in marriage and family counseling, and a popular seminar speaker who is in high demand nationwide. Working in the areas of empathy-based relationships, parenting with emotional intelligence, family systems therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and addiction recovery, George offers patients a path toward integrating sensible psychological insights within a solid Orthodox foundation. George has been a frequent guest speaker for the Archdiocese Center for Family Care, and has also

been a frequent facilitator at the Metropolis of San Francisco Clergy Couples Retreats. George holds Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Ancient Biblical Literature from Simpson College and a Master of Arts degree in marriage and family therapy from Azusa Pacific University. George and his wife Kim have two children, Olivia, a college student, and Petros, a teenager. He is a steward at the Ascension Cathedral in Oakland, CA.

Profile Koulianos

Dr. George Koulianos, M.D.

Dr. George Koulianos has been involved in the Archdiocese Center for Family Care Clergy Initiative Program since its inception in February 2016. In addition to being part of the Steering Committee, his role is to educate laity on the unique challenges faced by Clergy families and how these challenges can impact the local parish. Funding for this initiative has been made possible through generous grants from the Lilly Endowment, which is providing for Dr. Koulianos to travel with a financial planner to each Metropolis and conduct financial planning seminars for Clergy. He has also made presentations at the Archdiocese Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress, the Archdiocesan Presbyters Council and Leadership 100. He is a member of the Order of St Andrew and Leadership 100. He has been active at his parish of Annunciation in Mobile, AL in numerous capacities over the years and serves on the Metropolis Council for the Metropolis of Atlanta Council. Dr. Koulianos is an Archon in the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle and is a member of Leadership 100. Dr. Koulianos is the Program Director at The Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama.
