The Modern Greek Studies Foundation and The Center for Modern Greek Studies at San Francisco State University present Socrates Now, a dramatic solo performance of the Apology of Socrates by Plato, depicting the famous philopsopher at his jury trial in 399 BC, peformed by Emmy Award winner Yannis Simonides of Elliniko Theatro (Greek Theater) of New York and Athens (as seen in the recent PBS/National Geographic special "The Greeks" ).

Socrates was charged with impiety and corruption of the youth in 399 BCE in ancient Athens. He was tried at the age of 70 before a jury of 501 citizens. The Apology is Plato’s firsthand dramatic account of the speech delivered by Socrates in his defense as he faced his jury. Take a seat with other jurors as Socrates goes on trial for his life. Hear the philosopher address his accusers with wit, logic, and the courage of his ideals. Enjoy the post-performance opportunity to discuss with the actor the ramifications of your verdict.
