The Christian Education ministry of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco invites all Church School teachers, aides, and directors to join in 1 of 2 "Foundations of Teaching" webinars titled "The Pilgrimage of Teaching" presented by Dr. Paraskeve Tibbs. Each live presentation will be approximately one hour long and include graphics and an outline handout. It is offered at the beginning of the new school year to set a foundational understanding for the important spiritual and educational role that teachers, aides, and directors fill within our parishes.
The second presentation on Monday evening, September 19th at 8:00 pm is a repeat of the presentation from the previous Saturday morning (September 17th at 9:00 am). Participants may join the visual presentation from computer, smartphone, or tablet, and the audio-only from any telephone. The webinar is offered as a free parish resource of the Christian Education ministry of the metropolis.
About the Theme
A pilgrim is someone who is on a quest or a journey for something – especially something sacred. The process of the entire Christian life could be described as a "pilgrimage". This webinar will remind Orthodox Christian Educators (catechists) that we are each pilgrims, on a journey together – teacher and student, priest and layperson, old and young. Not one of us has the secret keys to understanding. God will use everyone in the Church to teach what He wants us to learn. Catechists are no different than anyone else in the Church, but they have a calling to let their lives and actions model the Christian life to their students. This is how Jesus Christ taught his disciples, and is an important aspect of the "pilgrimage of teaching" to be discussed in this webinar. Other aspects to be presented:
- Experience as the best teacher
- "Religious Imagination" and Mystery
- Intellectual and experiential learning
- Creating space for developing question and the search for answers
- Teaching as Modeling and Apprenticeship
