A series of historic events took place in San Francisco, California from April 15 – 19. 2026, as the Greater Bay Area welcomed the Presidential Guard of the Hellenic Republic during its first-ever visit to the West Coast of the United States. The visit was centered around Greek Independence Day commemorations, organized by Taso Zographos, President of the United Hellenic American Societies of California whose vision, generosity and tenacity made this historic event possible.

Representing His Excellency Mr. Konstantinos Tassoulas, President of the Hellenic Republic, the Evzones embarked on a tour across Northern California, bringing together generations of Greek Americans through a series of spiritually uplifting and culturally significant events. Their visit included appearances at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral – San Francisco, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church – Sacramento, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church – Belmont, and Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church – San Jose.

His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, formally welcomed the Presidential Guard to the Metropolis on Wednesday, April 15, following a reception held at San Francisco City Hall, hosted by Mayor Daniel Lurie. That same evening included a visit to the Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco where an educational program was offered and the faithful were able to personally engage with the Evzones, learning more about their significance in history and how they continue to carry forth their responsibilities rooted in honor, discipline, and a deep sense of duty to faith, country, and the enduring ideals of Hellenism.

In reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Metropolitan Gerasimos remarked, “This unprecedented visit by the Presidential Guard stands as a testament to the enduring faith, cultural heritage, and unity of the Greek Orthodox community on the West Coast. It was especially meaningful for all who witnessed firsthand the dignity and history of our Hellenic tradition, instilling pride, strengthening identity, and reminding us that our faith and heritage continue to guide and inspire the next generation.”

On Thursday, April 16, the Evzones traveled to Sacramento where they marched at the State Capitol and participated in the raising of the Greek flag. The ceremony was held in the presence of California Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, and Mr. Grigorios Tassiopoulos, Consul General of the Hellenic Republic in San Francisco, underscoring the enduring bonds between Greece and the United States.

The celebrations culminated on Sunday, April 19, 2026, with a grand parade and Greek flag-raising ceremony at Union Square in downtown San Francisco. This landmark event drew more than 1,000 faithful from across Northern California. The Evzones marched into the square with solemn precision, saluted the Greek flag as it was raised, and stood in honor during a memorial service commemorating those who fought for faith and freedom. The memorial was led by Rev. Father Constantinos Economos, Dean of the Annunciation Cathedral – San Francisco, and Rev. Father Nicholas Metrakos, Assistant Priest at Holy Trinity Church – San Francisco, who were representing His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos.

The success of this historic visit is attributed in large part to the tireless efforts and visionary leadership of Tasos Zografos, President of the United Hellenic American Societies of California.
